About Helsinge

Known for

Village pond

Known for

Christiern Pedersen

Known for

Nordsjælland Håndbold

By the village pond in the middle of Helsinge, a memorial wall honours Christiern Pedersen, the humanist scholar, printer and publisher who spent his last years in the town. From the pond runs Østergade, the pedestrian street renovated alongside it, where many of the town's specialist shops are found. Helsinge has a gymnasium, a railway station and Metro Therm, its best-known company, and on match days the handball club Nordsjælland Håndbold draws a crowd for games in the top Danish division.

The town sits in Nordsjælland as the seat of Gribskov Kommune, a municipality named after Gribskov, one of the largest forests in Denmark. Part of Arresø lies within the municipality, and it has a coastline on the Kattegat. Valby Hegn, a small plantation close to Helsinge, holds no fewer than seven long barrows from the Stone Age, and ancient sites such as Baunebakke and Pedershøi carry the memory of older times. Laugø Smedie, an old smithy turned museum, sits nearby.

Whether you left for the city or never went anywhere, the pond and the station are where Helsinge welcomes you back.
