Käthchenstadt

Known for

European Green Capital

Where else does a city's horizon end in vineyards? Heilbronn spreads over both banks of the Neckar at the foot of the Wartberg, and the slopes around it are covered in vines – which is why it is known as a city of wine.

What sets Heilbronn apart now is its turn towards green: in October 2025 it was named European Green Capital for 2027. It is also the Käthchenstadt, named after the heroine of Heinrich von Kleist's play, and a university city. From the late Middle Ages it grew into an important trading centre on the river, and in the early 19th century it was one of the first places in Württemberg to industrialise. The old town was almost entirely destroyed in the air raid of 4 December 1944 and rebuilt in the 1950s, so the Kilianskirche, the Rathaus Heilbronn and the Götzenturm stand among largely post-war streets. The experimenta science centre gives the city a newer landmark.

Picture the Wartbergturm on its hill above the vines, the Neckar below and the Kilianskirche marking the centre of town.
