Voith
Schloss Hellenstein
Swabian dialect
Heidenheim is known for two things above all: Voith, the industrial company that has its headquarters here, and Schloss Hellenstein, the castle on the hill above the Brenz. It is the largest town and the seat of its district, the third largest in East Württemberg after Aalen and Schwäbisch Gmünd, and its people speak Swabian, in which the town becomes Hoidna or Hoirna.
Heidenheim lies close to the Bavarian border, at the northeastern corner of the Swabian Alb between the Albuch and the Härtsfeld, where the Stubental meets the valley of the Brenz. The river rises in nearby Königsbronn, then flows south through Schnaitheim, the town centre and Mergelstetten before heading on towards Herbrechtingen. Schnaitheim, once a small town of its own, has grown so close that no gap remains. In town, the Kunstmuseum Heidenheim and the Museum im Römerbad add art and history to the industry.
Coming home here means autumn fog lying in the valley, snow on the hills in winter, and the castle rising above it all, exactly where it has always been.
