Ice Age landscape
Hedensted lies midway between Horsens and Vejle, right on a line in the landscape drawn by Ice Age glaciers: flat land and gravel pits to the west, hillier and richer farmland to the east. Together with its northern neighbour Løsning it forms one continuous town, the seat of a municipality that reaches out to Juelsminde on the coast. Its oldest building is Hedensted Kirke, known above all for its early murals of Christ, St Peter and St Paul.
Hedensted still carries the feeling of a town that grew up around the railway and the road. It became a station town where the main road crossed the line; the station closed, then reopened on roughly the same spot, and the main road that once ran straight through the centre was moved out of town, leaving quieter streets behind. Residential neighbourhoods spread around the old core, and industry followed to the south and west.
Growing up here means knowing the shortcuts between the villa streets, the old mounds of Terpenshøje and Terpshøje, and the lakes made from former gravel pits. The map shows them all, exactly where you remember them.
