Railway town
In Hedehusene, Roskildevej, the road towards Roskilde, turns into Københavnsvej, the road towards Copenhagen, and right through the middle of town the same stretch is simply Hovedgaden, the main shopping street. This is a railway town by birth: the station opened on the line between Copenhagen and Roskilde only because the steam locomotives had to stop for water. Brickworks and gravel pits did the rest, and Hedehus Brickyard was for a time the largest in the country.
Kallerupstenen, one of Denmark's oldest rune stones, stands by Ansgarkirken, carrying an inscription to Hornbore, kinsman of Svide, and two small cup-shaped hollows thought to belong to a cult far older than runes. The town's very name grew out of Kongens Hedehus, the King's Heath House, where a bailiff guarded Christian IV's private road and later served travellers as an inn. To the west and south, old gravel pits have become Hedeland, a large recreational area with lakes, riding paths, mountain bike trails and an amphitheatre for open-air opera. Rockwool, west of town, is the biggest employer, and Nærheden is growing as a new neighbourhood on the southern side.
If your Hedehusene means the pizzerias on Hovedgaden, the swimming pool in Fløng or a ride through Hedeland, you already know exactly where you are on this map.
