Sogndalstrand

Hauge sits along the river Sokno in the Dalane district of Rogaland, between the coastal villages of Rekefjord and Sogndalsstranda, and serves as the administrative centre of Sokndal Municipality. Locals call it Haua, and the name itself goes back to the Old Norse haugr – a mound or burial tumulus – which is why it is often written Hauge i Dalane, to tell it apart from the many other Hauges in Norway.

Ruggesteinen, a rocking stone near the centre that a single person can set in motion, has been protected since 1923. Sokndal Church, a cruciform church built in 1803, stands in the village, and the old trading post of Sogndalstrand counts as part of Hauge too, with its fisheries and maritime museum by the water.

Mining shaped the place as well: ilmenite was dug at Sandbekk just north-east of the centre before the work moved to Tellnes above Jøssingfjord. The detail that lingers is that stone, enormous and still, waiting for someone to give it a push.
