About Hareid

Melshornet
Hareid sits on the eastern coast of Hareidlandet, facing across the Sulafjorden towards the island of Sula, and it has long been where this island meets the rest of the world. It is the administrative centre of Hareid Municipality, with a shopping centre, a hotel, some industry and Hareid Church.
For most people, Hareid means arriving or leaving. The ferry crosses the Sulafjorden to Sulesund, the express boat heads into Ålesund, and the county road runs across the island to Ulsteinvik on the far side. Other roads lead north to Brandal and south to Hjørungavåg. Generations have stood on the quay here, waiting for a boat, watching the fjord.
Around the village the mountains rise: Melshornet, Holstadhornet and Håbakknotten, the skyline everyone from here knows by heart. Picture the ferry turning in towards the quay, with Melshornet on the skyline.
