River Weser

Known for

Klüt hill

Have you ever climbed the Klüt on a clear evening and watched the Weser bend through the town below? Hamelin sits on the river in Lower Saxony, south-west of Hanover, and the hill rising directly to the west of the old town is the best place to understand why it was built here.

The town lies at the heart of the Weserbergland Schaumburg-Hameln nature park, with the Weser hills to the west and the Leine hills to the east. Two smaller rivers, the Hamel and the Humme, join the Weser within the town. A monastery founded in 851 at a convenient crossing grew into a market and then a town, and Hamelin was once ringed by four fortresses, earning it the nickname "Gibraltar of the North". From the ruins of one of them, Fort George, people built the Klütturm as a lookout tower in 1843.

The Pied Piper may have made Hamelin famous, but you know the river, the hill and the tower – and that is the Hamelin worth wearing.
