Handel's birthplace
River Saale
Nebra sky disc
The Saale runs for 27 kilometres through Halle, splitting into several arms and spreading into a broad floodplain before the White Elster joins it in the south of the city. Halle is the largest town on the river and the second city of Saxony-Anhalt, and everyday life here has its own rhythm: one of Germany's most extensive tram networks, a university that ranks among the country's oldest, and a radio centre from which Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk sends the night programme to stations across Germany.
The Marktkirche Unser Lieben Frauen and the Roter Turm stand for the old town, and on the market square the Handel Monument stands as Germany's only monument to the composer born in the city; his birthplace is now a museum. The Franckesche Stiftungen zu Halle, the Moritzburg and the Hallescher Dom add more history, and the State Museum of Prehistory keeps the Nebra sky disc.
The image that sums the city up is a simple one: Handel on his pedestal in the market square, with one of the city's trams never far away.
