FernUniversität Hagen
Fossil finds
Four rivers
Germany's only state-funded distance-learning university, the FernUniversität, is based in Hagen, but the city's story runs much deeper than its course material. Long before anyone studied here, the clay pit at Vorhalle preserved giant dragonflies and millipedes, and the area is still one of the world's key sites for Devonian and Carboniferous fossils. The region first appears in the written record in 775, when Charlemagne's troops took the Saxon stronghold of Hohensyburg.
The Karl-Ernst-Osthaus Museum and the Emil Schumacher Museum give the centre a real pull for anyone who cares about art, and the Hohenhof adds a manor house to the city's heritage. Up on the hills, the Kaiser Friedrich Turm and the Eugen-Richter-Turm look out over a place where four rivers – the Ruhr, the Lenne, the Volme and the Ennepe – run through the city and forest covers more than two fifths of the land.
Picture the Volme flowing between steep streets, some of them so sharp that the climb is felt in the calves, with wooded slopes rising straight behind the rooftops.
