Haderslev Cathedral
Guard parade
Kløften Festival
Most Fridays at noon, Slesvigske Musikkorps marches through Haderslev to the cathedral, where a memorial page is turned in a chapel for the fallen of the Schleswig foot regiment – the only guard parade in Denmark outside Copenhagen. Rituals like that set the rhythm of everyday life here, along with the cobbled streets and alleys of a centre made for strolling and houses that span the centuries from the fifteenth to the early twentieth.
Haderslev lies in a valley in the eastern part of Southern Jutland, where Haderslev Fjord cuts in from the Little Belt, divides the town and becomes Haderslev Dam to the west of the centre. Merchants from Ribe once met traders from the Baltic here, where the distance between the two coasts was shortest, and the town became one of the main trading centres of the region. The white Sct. Severin Kirke stands by the inner pond, the park Kløften hosts Kløften Festival over three days each year, and Ehlers Samlingen holds northern Europe's largest collection of earthenware from its period.
If you have ever walked along the dam with the cathedral ahead of you, this map is yours.
