About Haapajärvi

Known for

Savonian settlers

Known for

Tar burning

Known for

Pitkäkangas esker

Stone Age people made their homes where Haapajärvi now stands, beside the great river course by which the waters of Päijänne once drained north through the Hinkuanjoki towards the Gulf of Bothnia. Only when the lake broke a new channel south to the Kymijoki did the old route fall quiet. Today the town sits on the Suomenselkä uplands of North Ostrobothnia, exactly where the rolling hills of Central Finland flatten into the open Ostrobothnian plain.

It is a landscape that feels wide rather than dramatic. Clay banks line the shores of the lake of the same name and the rivers, bogs spread across the east and south, and the long esker of Pitkäkangas rises at the southern edge of town. Savonian settlers arrived in the sixteenth century and their speech still colours the local dialect, while tar burned in these forests was once hauled by horse across frozen marshes all the way to the mouth of the Kalajoki.

In the centre, Linninpuisto and Taistonpuisto break up the streets with green, the Kotiseutumuseo keeps the memory of a place that began with slash-and-burn clearings, hunting and fishing, and down at Pukkilahti the bay opens onto still water.
