Grugliasco is known to football fans across Italy as the home of the Museo del Grande Torino e della Leggenda Granata, and to its own people as the town of the crane — the bird on its coat of arms, which may recall the flocks that once stopped here on migration.
The Villaggio Leumann Ovest, Castello Provana and the Parco culturale le serre are the places locals point to, but the story starts earlier. Records from the eleventh century mention the curtis Grugliascum and its church of San Cassiano, which still stands in the historic centre, and in the seventeenth century the Duke of Savoy made the village a county. With no river of its own, the town only grew after the bealera of San Vito brought water from the Dora Riparia to its fields, and silk mills followed along the canal.
Just west of Turin, between Collegno and Rivoli, Grugliasco is where the city traffic thins out and the familiar streets begin — the point on the map where you know you are home.
