Grudziądz Granaries
City of Uhlans
speedway
Climb Góra Zamkowa, where the Zamek krzyżacki w Grudziądzu once stood, and the Vistula opens out below you. Grudziądz lies close to the east shore of the river in Chełmno Land, one of the oldest cities in north-central Poland, founded as a stronghold by Bolesław I the Brave to guard against the Baltic Prussians. The Teutonic Order re-fortified it from 1234.
Its setting is what gives it shape. Almost the whole city sits in the Grudziądz basin, with steep riverside heights rising above the valley floor. The well-preserved Old Town holds Gothic and Baroque landmarks on the European Route of Brick Gothic, above all the Grudziądz Granaries, the Spichlerz, a Historic Monument of Poland, along with the Brama Wodna and the Bazylika Kolegiacka Świętego Mikołaja Biskupa. It is also the 'City of Uhlans', after the Centrum Wyszkolenia Kawalerii, and a centre for water sports and speedway.
Anyone who grew up here can find the granaries, the gate and the river on the map at a glance – the same view they saw every day on the way into town.
