Seafaring heritage
Most sunny days
Ibsen-museet
Grimstad is known for ships and sunshine: a shipping town on the Skagerrak coast, home to long-established shipowning families, and measured as the place in Norway with the most sunny days a year. Its harbour has drawn sailors for centuries – a deposed King Christian II once sheltered his storm-scattered fleet here while trying to win back his kingdoms.
What sets Grimstad apart is how much of its story was written on the water. The town began as Grømstad, the landing place of the old Grøm farm. Later it earned a name as a haunt of smugglers, and during the Napoleonic Wars an English brig that sailed in to seize blockade runners was driven back out. Trading rights followed, and the boatbuilding never stopped: Norway's first plastic boat was launched here.
The By- og sjøfartsmuseet keeps that seafaring past, Ibsen-museet and Fjære kirke draw visitors, and Grimstad Church still stands on its small hill above the harbour – the view that tells anyone from Grimstad they are back.
