Djursland coast

Grenaa is the easternmost town in Jutland, a seaport on the coast of Djursland facing the Kattegat. The coastline is its great asset: Grenaa Strand, a long sandy beach backed by summer cottages, was once named the best beach in Denmark, and like every Danish coast it is open to everyone.

From the harbour the ferries head out to the island of Anholt and across to Halmstad in Sweden, and the light rail runs to Aarhus. Around the town, Djursland spreads out as a peninsula of rolling farmland, patches of forest and long shores that seldom feel crowded, and Grenaa is its only larger town.

In the old centre, Grenaa Kirke stands on the highest point of the medieval town, from the days when ships could sail up the river right into its heart. Museum Østjylland keeps the local story, and the mill at Baunhøj Mølle is the kind of landmark you trace on the map to show someone where the land runs out and the sea begins.
