River Ryck
Down at the Museumshafen, the River Ryck runs its last stretch towards the Danish Wiek, an inlet of the Bay of Greifswald. This is Greifswald, the University and Hanseatic City, set between the islands of Rügen and Usedom on the Baltic coast.
What makes Greifswald distinctive is the way scholarship and the sea run through it side by side. The university, founded in 1456, is the second-oldest in the Baltic region after Rostock, and its students give the city its daily rhythm. Greifswald is also the birthplace of Caspar David Friedrich, who painted the ruins of nearby Eldena Abbey again and again; the Caspar-David-Friedrich-Zentrum keeps his story in town, and the Pommersches Landesmuseum tells that of the wider region. The name itself means "Griffin's Forest", after the dukes of Pomerania.
You might know the Rubenow-Denkmal from your first day as a student, or the Museumswerft from Sunday walks along the Ryck. Either way, this flat, windy, bright city has a way of staying with you – carry it with you.
