Ask anyone who follows speedway about Gorzów, and they will start talking: the city's strong tradition in the sport is one of the first things people know about it. Gorzów Wielkopolski, usually shortened to Gorzów, lies on the Warta River in western Poland and shares the role of capital of Lubusz Voivodeship with Zielona Góra. Until 1945 it was Landsberg an der Warthe, a name that goes back to 1257.
For many people the city is above all a feeling of green space. Gorzów Woods stretch to the north, home to the Barlinek-Gorzów Landscape Park, and Noteć Woods lie to the south-east, while Park Wiosny Ludów and Park Pałacowy Zieleniec break up the streets in town. History shows in smaller details too: Kobylagóra, a name proposed after the war that never caught on, survives as the name of a street.
The Katedra Wniebowzięcia NMP, the old Mury obronne Miasta and the Fontanna Pauckscha are the city's signature – reason enough to carry Gorzów with you wherever you go.
