Lake Patria
Roman Liternum

On the shore of Lake Patria, where sand dunes once closed off a stretch of sea and turned it into a lagoon, lie the remains of Liternum, the Roman colony to which Scipio Africanus withdrew after defeating Hannibal, and where he died. This is the western edge of Giugliano in Campania, a large town on the Campanian plain north-west of Naples, in the fertile country once called Campania felix. The land is almost flat in the centre and east, then slopes gently towards a low, sandy coast running from Marina di Varcaturo to Licola.
The Cisterna Romana and the Colonne di Giugliano tell the rest of the story, of the people who left Liternum after the Vandals pillaged it and settled where the historic centre stands today. The Villa Comunale di Giugliano is the green space everyone in town knows.
One concrete detail sums the place up: a NATO command now has its base by the same lake where a Roman general once chose to live out his days.
