Baltic seaport
Modernist downtown
Gdynia Film Festival
Gdynia lies on the Baltic at the edge of Gdańsk Bay, a seaport squeezed between the water and the wooded hills of the Kashubian lakeland, with Sopot and Gdańsk just along the coast.
People who grew up here tend to remember a city that always smelt of the sea. The cruise ships and the ferries to Scandinavia, the beech woods of the Kępa Redłowska and the cliff at Orłowo. For centuries this was only a small Kashubian fishing village and, later, a seaside resort; once it gained city rights, it grew so fast that a whole modernist downtown went up within a few years, one that has since been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
It is a lively, liveable place, once voted Poland's best city to live in, home to the Gdynia Film Festival and a UNESCO City of Film. The Muzeum Emigracji, the Dar Pomorza and the ORP Błyskawica all belong to its maritime story. That is the Gdynia worth carrying with you: a city that faces the sea.
