Garbsen is best known as the town next door to Hanover that stopped being just a commuter town. For decades its people travelled into the city to work for Volkswagen, Continental and VARTA; today medium-sized firms have settled here and the Leibniz University of Hannover teaches mechanical engineering on its Garbsen campus.
The Stadtpark Garbsen is where much of the town comes to breathe, and it says something about the place: green, flat and close to water. Garbsen lies between the lowlands of the Leine and the Otternhagener Moor, with barely a few metres of difference in height anywhere. The sandy soil was dug out for bricks for much of the last century, and the pits filled with water to become the Blauer See, the Schwarzer See and the Berenbosteler See. Sand dunes still survive around the Garbsener Schweiz and Schloss Ricklingen, and the Werner-Baesmann-Park adds another green corner.
Whether your Garbsen is Havelse, Berenbostel or Auf der Horst, you know which lake you swam in as a child. Keep that corner of the map close.
