Valle Latina
Roman amphitheatre
Upper and lower town
Frosinone is the main city of the Valle Latina, the historic corridor that runs south from Rome towards Cassino, and the capital of its province, close to the motorway between Rome and Naples. Until the nineteenth century it was a rural village; the twentieth turned it into an industrial and commercial centre.
The anfiteatro romano is one of the few traces left of a much longer past. Volscian Frusna and Roman Frusino sat on a road everyone wanted, and the town was sacked again and again, while an earthquake in September 1349 did more damage still. The Tomba Sant'Angelo and the finds in the city's archaeological museum fill in the rest. The Romans took it in 386 BC, and controlling it meant controlling the traffic between north and south.
Grow up here and you learn the town in two halves, Frosinone alta on its hill above the Sacco valley and Frosinone bassa spreading down below, and this map is where they finally fit together, from the Arco Campagiorni to the Parco Matusa.
