Corbinian's bear
The bear on Freising's coat of arms comes with a story. On his way to Rome, Saint Corbinian lost his packhorse to a wild bear, and so he made the bear carry his luggage over the Alps instead. The saddled bear has been the town's symbol ever since, on its arms, in statues and in paintings, and Freising itself is one of the oldest settlements in Bavaria, the oldest town between Regensburg and Bolzano.
For anyone who belongs here, Freising is a feeling made of two hills. On the Domberg stand the Freisinger Dom and the former bishops' residence; on the other, around the old Weihenstephan Abbey, is the oldest working brewery in the world, and a glass at the Bräustüberl Weihenstephan is how many a long evening begins. Between them run the Moosach and the Isar, and further out lie the fens of the Freisinger Moos.
Wherever you end up, keep a little of that with you: the bear, the two hills and the river, and the town that knows where you are from.
