The Bächle
Freiburg Minster
University town
Freiburg was founded in 1120 by Konrad and Duke Berthold III of the House of Zähringen as a free market town, and the name still says so: a fortified town of free citizens. It soon became the commercial and intellectual centre of the Upper Rhine, and its university, founded in 1457, is one of the oldest in Germany. Daily life still runs on that mix of students, markets and the Bächle, the little runnels of Dreisam water that line almost every street in the old town.
The city lies at the south-western foot of the Black Forest on the Dreisam, in the Breisgau, one of Germany's warmest regions and part of the Baden wine country. Its limits climb from the plain all the way to the summit of the Schauinsland and stop 3 kilometres short of the French border, while Switzerland lies 42 kilometres to the south. In the middle of it all rise the Münster Unserer Lieben Frau, the Martinstor and the Schwabentor.
Whether you studied here or only stayed one summer, you will remember the sound of the Bächle running past your door.
