Roskilde Fjord
Frederikssund sits on the shore of Roskilde Fjord, at the narrow crossing to the Hornsherred peninsula, where a ferry once carried people over before a bridge took its place. The town began as a loading place for Slangerup, known as Sundby Færge, where Frederik II had building materials for Frederiksborg Slot brought ashore, and it was later named after Frederik III.
Kronprins Frederiks Bro, the old link across the fjord, now shares the work with Kronprinsesse Marys Bro. Willumsens Museum, devoted to the painter J.F. Willumsen, and Frederikssund Museum hold the town's art and history, while the Vikingespil, a large open-air theatre staged every year, has carried the name of Frederikssund far beyond the fjord. Frederikssund Vikingeboplads adds the Viking age in a form you can walk through.
For anyone who grew up here, the map shows the harbour, the bridges and the railway line ending at the water, the town you learned by heart on the way to the fjord.
