Gunpowder Tower
Ferry port
Fishing harbour
In Fiskerklyngen, the oldest district of Frederikshavn, the houses date from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, though the quarter itself goes back to the middle of the sixteenth. This is a town built on fishing and its harbours, a ferry port with sailings to Gothenburg and a naval base close to the entrance to the Baltic. It was called Fladstrand, flat beach, until it was renamed after a king; the new name means Frederik's harbour.
Krudttårnet, the Gunpowder Tower, is the piece of that history everyone here knows. Built as part of a citadel, it outlived the wall and the gate around it and now sits on the municipal coat of arms. Nordre Skanse, the fortification north of town, is older still, and Bunkermuseet and Bangsbo Museum carry the story further. South of town Pikkerbakken rises with deep meltwater ravines, and out in Kattegat lie the islands of Hirsholmene.
Anyone who grew up in Frederikshavn can find the way from the fishing harbour to Krudttårnet without thinking, and the map keeps those streets exactly as you remember them from childhood.
