Frederiksberg is completely surrounded by Copenhagen, yet has kept itself apart: an enclave west of the old city with its own mayor and its own council, and a fierce sense of independence. People have lived on this ground since the Bronze Age, when it was known as Tulehøj, the hill of the thul, the reciter of old verse.
Its story as a town begins with King Frederik III, who let Dutch farmers settle at Allégade, in a village first called Ny Hollænderby. Farming went badly and fire destroyed most of the town, but Frederik IV then built a palace on Valby Bakke, named it Frederichs Berg – today's Frederiksberg Slot – and the rebuilt town took the name. Wealthy Copenhageners bought houses here as country retreats, and what sets Frederiksberg apart today is still that mix of density and green: the smallest municipality in Denmark by area, the most densely populated, and full of parks such as Frederiksberg Have, Søndermarken and Hostrups Have.
Copenhagen Zoo is actually here, not in Copenhagen, and so are Cisternerne, Det Kinesiske Lysthus and Mindehøjen i Søndermarken.
