The town of Fredensborg grew up outside the gates of a palace whose name means the Palace of Peace, chosen to mark the end of the Great Northern War. Before that, the only settlement here was the village of Asminderød, whose church still stands and is older than the palace by several centuries.
Fredensborg lies in North Zealand, close to Esrum Sø, on the Little North line between Hillerød and Helsingør. Everyday life moves between the station, the pedestrian street and the palace gardens. In spring and autumn the royal family is in residence at Fredensborg Slot, and the street leading up to its main entrance is lined with listed houses and the historic inn Store Kro. Then there are the Fredensborg Houses, designed by Jørn Utzon, the architect of the Sydney Opera House, and Falkonergården, a name every local knows.
From Fredensborg Slot to Nordmandsdalen, the palace has given this town its name, its streets and its calm, and that is the reason a map of Fredensborg is something its people would happily wear.
