River Loimijoki
Lake Koijärvi
Forssa sits almost exactly in the middle of the triangle drawn by Helsinki, Turku and Tampere, at the point where the river Loimijoki begins. Its name comes from the Swedish word for rapids, and it was by that water that the industrialist Axel Wilhelm Wahren set up a spinning mill, the start of the textile town Forssa became. The workers' party of Finland met here at the Forssa meeting and took the name Social Democratic Party, and the mill community itself is now counted among the nationally significant built environments in the country.
For anyone from Forssa, the mill town is never far from mind. It lives on in the wooden houses along the lines of Kalliomäki, in the green of Wahrenin puisto and in the collections of Forssan museo, while Forssan luonnonhistoriallinen museo covers the natural side. Out of town, Lake Kaukjärvi is close by, and Koijärvi in the north is remembered as the birthplace of the Green League.
And there is Yliskylä, the old neighbourhood just west of Uusikylä that has gone by the nickname Ameriikka for as long as anyone can remember.
