Fetsund Lenser
River Glomma
Timber floating
On the footway of the old railway bridge, walkers cross the Glomma where trains and road traffic once shared the span, on a roadway so flimsy that bus passengers had to climb out and walk over. Fetsund today is mostly a place to live, low-built and quiet with very little industry, and close enough to Lillestrøm and Oslo that commuters fill the trains from Fetsund station each morning.
The village sits on a strait in the Glomma, Norway's largest river, just before it winds through a great inland delta and into Øyeren. This was the shortest crossing on the old kings' road from medieval Oslo towards Sweden, a ferry point long before any bridge, and the name says as much: fet, where water meets grass, and sund, a strait. New housing has spread over Hovinhøgda, Nerdrum and Garderåsen, and on the high ground behind the station Fetsund batteri stands on the farm at Vilberg.
The logging days are over, but the timber booms remain at Fetsund Lenser, now a national museum, alongside Fetsund Lensemuseum. For anyone who grew up with those booms in the river, that is the picture worth wearing.
