The Este court
Renaissance planning
Po Delta
Ferrara is known as the city of the Este, the family that ruled it for more than three centuries and turned it into one of the great courts of Renaissance Italy. Borso d'Este was made duke of Ferrara by the Pope, and Ercole I was among the most generous patrons of the arts of his age. Their legacy is still the city itself: broad streets and a long run of Renaissance palaces, from the Palazzo dei Diamanti to the Palazzina di Marfisa D'Este.
What makes it unique is how deliberately it was planned. The Renaissance extension known as the Addizione Erculea earned Ferrara the title of the first modern capital of Europe, and UNESCO lists both its historic centre and the Po Delta with the Este pleasure residences. The town lies on the Po di Volano, below the level of the main river, and its fields were won from the marshes and are still drained by canals.
For anyone from Ferrara, home is the Cattedrale di San Giorgio Martire at the end of the street and the flat, familiar plain all around.
