Limestone quarry
Faxe Bryggeri
Oldest village school
For many years the letter x was considered unnatural in Danish, so Faxe had to be written Fakse, even though the Old Norse name, meaning horse mane, had the x all along. Both forms survive, and everyday life in the town on Zealand still runs through the names it is known for: Faxe Bryggeri, the brewery of Royal Unibrew behind beer and soft drinks such as Faxe Kondi, and a Haribo liquorice factory founded here in 1935.
Fakse Kalkbrud, a vast limestone quarry, lies on the edge of town, and Geomuseum Faxe beside it tells the story of how it was dug. In the centre stands Faxe Kirke, and the half-timbered Rasmus Svendsens Skole is Denmark's oldest surviving village school. The town even lays claim to Rollo, the Viking who became the first ruler of Normandy, and Udsigten Faxe and Blåbæk Vindmølle are on the map too.
One last trace of the narrow-gauge railway that once ran from the quarry down to the harbour at Faxe Ladeplads still survives: a single train, kept in the model town, Faxe mini by.
