Fauske is known for marble, with the town's industry long tied to the local stone, and for being the place where roads and rails meet in Salten. The E6 and the road west to Bodø cross here, the Nordlandsbanen stops at Fauske Station, and a county road heads off from Finneid towards Sulitjelma.
The setting is what stays with you. The town sits at the head of Fauskevika, an arm of the Skjerstad Fjord, with the lake Nervatnet on its south-eastern side. It lies inside the Arctic Circle, so summer brings the midnight sun and weeks of daylight round the clock, while in December the sun barely clears the horizon before it sets again. The fjord stays free of ice, which softens the winters. In the middle of it all is Marmortorget, the marble square, with Melenci park and Radioskogen close by, and Fauske bygdetun keeps a collection of old houses as part of the Nordland Museum. The name comes from fauskr, an old and rotten tree.
If you have stood on Marmortorget under the midnight sun, you know what this map is worth. It is yours to take home.
