About Fasano

Known for

Egnazia ruins

Known for

Selva di Fasano

Known for

ancient olive groves

Fasano grew out of a hamlet founded by people who had left the ruins of Egnazia, once a busy port on the Via Traiana. The town still looks out from the edge of the Murgia dei Trulli over olive groves that run all the way down to the Adriatic, and the archaeological park of Egnatia sits on its own coast.

Ask anyone from here and they will talk about summer days at Torre Canne or Savelletri, the shade of the Selva di Fasano above the town, and the fortified masserie scattered through the olive country. The faso, the wild dove of the local legend, still perches on the coat of arms, and the Museo della Casa alla Fasanese is devoted to the traditional Fasano home.

A map of Fasano is a map of growing up between hill and sea: the road down to the beach, the church of San Giovanni Battista, the public garden that now covers the old pool where the doves once drank.
