Two lakes
Medieval church
Inside Farum's church, parts of the first stone church, built here early in the Middle Ages, still stand within the walls. Long before that, an ancient road known as Kong Volmers vej ran from the royal seat at Lejre through Farum towards the north, crossing Mølleåen at the western end of Farum Sø. The name keeps the memory of it: in Old Norse, far meant a road or a crossing, and -rum an open space cleared in the forest.
There is a quiet comfort in knowing how much this town has come through. The wars with Sweden left the area badly damaged, and the neighbouring village of Bodelstorp was never rebuilt. Then came recovery: fertile farmland, a star-shaped road network left behind by the land reforms, and the railway to Copenhagen that later became the Hareskovbanen line of the S-train. Farum grew into a commuter town, and Midtpunktet, its great apartment complex, became home to people from all over the world.
Farumgård, the manor first built by the bishop of Roskilde, still stands, and FC Nordsjælland play at Right to Dream Park in Farum West. For anyone who grew up here, the map shows both halves of town, the motorway between them and the two lakes on either side, just as you first learned them from the saddle of a bike.
