Lido and Sassonia

Did you grow up where the Via Flaminia meets the Adriatic? Then you know Fano: a seaside town in the Marche with a Roman arch at its gate, a carnival among the oldest in Italy and two beaches, sandy Lido and pebbly Sassonia.

There is a feeling here of history kept close at hand. The town began as Fanum Fortunae, named after a temple to the goddess Fortuna; Augustus gave it walls, parts of which remain, and in 2 AD the Arco d'Augusto, which still stands at the entrance to town. In 2026 excavations in the piazza uncovered the Basilica Vitruviana, the civic basilica Vitruvius described in his treatise. Later the Malatesta ruled here, leaving the Rocca Malatestiana and the Palazzo Malatestiano, and after the Gothic wars Fano led the maritime Pentapolis, five cities strung along this coast.

If you have moved away, you will remember summer evenings on the Lido and the walk back under the arch. Keep that walk with you; all of it is here on the map.
