Fagerstrand lies at the southern tip of the Nesodden peninsula, on the water south of Oslo, right where Nesodden meets the neighbouring municipality of Frogn. Its name means fair beach, and it earns it.
On the map it is the last village on the peninsula: Fjellstrand lies some way to the north, and the municipal centre at Nesoddtangen is further still. Oslo is closer than it looks; by bus and boat the trip takes an hour, and a direct bus runs at rush hour. The village itself is small, with a couple of grocery shops, two schools, Myklerud skole and Bakkeløkka ungdomsskole, and a sports club that plays football, handball and floorball. The shoreline is where life happens, with diving boards, a floating jetty, fishing and boats. Behind the houses, marked trails lead through the woods to Toppåsen and to a scout cabin at Tjernsbråtan. The place was originally called Grisebu, until a property sale around 1900 brought the prettier name that later spread to the whole village.
Toppåsen is the high point of all this, the hill above the beaches. Put it on a shirt and every Fagerstrand kid will know the way up.
