Ever wondered why tin-glazed pottery is called faience? The word comes from Faenza, a town in Romagna on the Lamone river and the Via Emilia, between Imola and Forlì, just where the plain meets the first hills of the Apennines. Everyday life here mixes farming, industry and craft: vineyards climb the slopes, cereals and orchards fill the plain, and the workshops in town still fire their kilns.

What makes Faenza different is that its craft never left. Ceramics are still made here, the Museo Internazionale delle Ceramiche in Faenza is the town's pride, and in October 2025 UNESCO named it a Creative City for Crafts and Folk Arts. Under the Manfredi the town flourished through the Renaissance and Baroque; later it became a centre of Neoclassicism, seen at its finest in Palazzo Milzetti, home of the Museo nazionale dell'età neoclassica in Romagna. The Museo Carlo Zauli carries the story into more recent times.

Walk in through the Porta delle Chiavi, past the Monumento a Evangelista Torricelli, and the town opens up as it has for centuries: brick and glaze, with the Via Emilia running straight through.
