Old harbour town
Faaborg is known for its busy harbour, its narrow streets and the old houses that have survived in remarkable numbers at the heart of the town. It is an old port on Faaborg Fjord on the south coast of Funen, with the small islands of Det Fynske Øhav scattered offshore. Its written history starts early: a deed of gift dated 1229 names Foburgh, the fox castle, handed by Valdemar II to his daughter-in-law Eleanor. Of the moat and the town wall, only Vesterport, the old town gate, is left.
Øhavsmuseet keeps the town's story in the old merchant's yard by the harbour, a reminder of the centuries when Faaborg grew rich on the sea, shipping corn to Norway and later sending its ships as far as the Mediterranean. Faaborg Museum for Fynsk Malerkunst is devoted to the painters of Funen, and Arresten, the old jail, now holds a museum of crime and punishment. A monastery founded here in the late Middle Ages has gone, but its chapel lives on as the parish church.
Ferries still leave the quay for Avernakø, Bjørnø, Lyø and Søby on Ærø. For anyone who has sailed back in past the islands, the first sight of the rooftops above the harbour means one thing: home again.
