River Otra
Evje takes its name from an old farm called Efja, an Old Norse word for an "eddy", a fitting name for a village on the river Otra. The village grew up as a station on the Setesdalsbanen railway, and rich mineral deposits gave it mines for several hundred years, including nickel mines and a nickel refinery whose ore led to the Falconbridge company in Kristiansand.
Evjemoen Forsvarsmuseum stands at the former military base just south of the village, the place that made Evje a familiar name to generations of Norwegians who did their service there. Evje og Hornnes Mineralmuseum tells the older story written in the rock. Since 1960 the village has been the centre of Evje og Hornnes Municipality, after serving as the centre of the old Evje Municipality.
On the map, follow the Otra south: Evje Church on the east bank at the north end of the village, National Road 9 alongside the water, and Hornnes Church farther down on the west shore.
