Viking Age graves
Heart of Eura
Kauttua ironworks
Eura is famous for what lies beneath its fields. Few places in Finland can match its prehistoric finds, and Luistari is the largest excavated Viking Age burial ground anywhere in the Nordic countries. The grave of the so-called Mistress of Eura gave the country one of its best-known ancient costumes, and a leather belt studded with heart-shaped mounts, the Euran sydän, became the model for a line of jewellery and later the municipality's own emblem. Not every famous Euran comes from the Iron Age, though: the DJ Darude comes from here, and so did Carl Oscar Malm, founder of Finnish Sign Language.
The municipality lies in Satakunta, bordering Rauma and Säkylä, with Kokemäki and Eurajoki among its other neighbours. Bronze Age people built great stone cairns on the shore of Panelianlahti, and much later the rapids at Kauttua powered first an ironworks and then the Ahlström paper mill. The Esihistorian opastuskeskus Naurava lohikäärme tells the long story, and the Käräjäkivet add a piece of their own.
The picture that stays, though, is Kauttua: the old ironworks buildings in the Ruukinpuisto, the neoclassical manor among them, and the water still rushing over the rapids below.
