Huguenot heritage
The Regnitz cuts Erlangen into two halves of equal size as it flows from south to north, while the Rhine–Main–Danube Canal runs alongside it to the west. The Schwabach joins the river north of the centre, and to the north-east and east the Erlanger Oberland rises towards the hills of the Fränkische Schweiz.
The Hugenottenbrunnen recalls the Huguenots who settled here after the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685, a legacy still noticeable in the city today. Around it stand the Neustädter Kirche and town palaces such as the Egloffsteinsches Palais, and the Botanischer Garten Erlangen adds a green pocket close by. Erlangen is the smallest of the eight major cities in Bavaria, shaped by the Friedrich Alexander University and by Siemens.
And then there is the Bergkirchweih. If you have ever spent an evening there among old school friends, you will understand why Erlangen is worth wearing.
