Medieval old town

Houses line the Krämerbrücke, the Merchants' Bridge, as it carries Erfurt's old town across the Gera – one of the rare bridges with houses built on it. Around it lies one of the best-preserved medieval centres in Germany, and a city that keeps busy: the second-largest trade fair in eastern Germany, the children's channel KiKa, a major rail junction and a logistics trade drawn by its central position. Up on the cathedral hill, the Erfurter Dom holds the largest free-swinging medieval bell in the world.

Erfurt sits in the wide valley of the Gera, in the southern part of the Thuringian Basin and north of the Thuringian Forest, with the wooded Steigerwald forming its southern edge. It is the middle link in a chain of Thuringian cities running from Eisenach through Gotha, Erfurt, Weimar and Jena to Gera, and one of the larger cities closest to the geographic centre of Germany. The Alte Synagoge Erfurt, the oldest intact synagogue in Europe, and the Mikwe are part of its UNESCO World Heritage.

If Erfurt is your city, you already know the way across the Krämerbrücke without looking – this map simply draws it for you.
