Hunebedden
The Hondsrug
An open, green city
How many towns can say that people lived on their doorstep thousands of years before they had a name? In Emmen the proof lies in the woods: hunebedden, the great stone tombs of Drenthe, stand around the town, from Hunebed D45 Emmerdennen to the pair at Angelslo, and even Neanderthals left flint tools behind in this area.
What makes Emmen distinctive is how it was built. It began as an esdorp on the south-eastern slope of the Hondsrug, first recorded in 1139 as Emne, and grew into what planners call an open, green city: new neighbourhoods were placed at a deliberate distance from the old core, so that valuable landscape could survive in between. Around it, the drained peatlands produced the colonies of Emmer-Compascuum, Erica, Klazienaveen and Nieuw-Amsterdam, and Emmen became the centre they all looked to.
The nickname Vlinderstad, butterfly city, nods to the former zoo, now Wildlands Adventure Zoo Emmen. But the image that belongs to this place is older: grey boulders under the trees of the Emmerdennen, a short walk from someone's front door.
