River Glomma
Garrison town
Forestry museum
Elverum straddles the river Glomma east of Hamar, the market town for middle Østerdalen and the northern part of Solør. Its two halves face each other across the water: Leiret on the east bank, with the shops, the church, the hospital and the university, and Vestad on the west, with the industry, the Terningmoen military base and the station where the Rørosbanen and Solørbanen lines meet.
Christiansfjeld festning explains why the east bank is called Leiret, the camp. The fortifications began as Hammersberg Skanse, were renamed by King Christian V of Denmark during a visit, and drew soldiers, merchants and craftsmen to settle beside them. Elverum became a garrison town, and the Oppland Regiment was based at Terningmoen until it was disbanded. On the west bank, Glomdalsmuseet and Norsk Skogmuseum keep the valley's story.
Crossing the Glomma into Leiret, with the forest all around, is how Elverum says welcome home.
