Ełk Lake
Teutonic castle
Ełk is known as the capital of Masuria, the largest town in the lake district, set on the shore of a glacial lake and ringed by forest. It grew around a castle of the Teutonic Knights, was settled by Poles from Masovia and became a centre of Polish printing and schooling in the region, home to the first printing house in Masuria.
There is an easy, waterside feel to everyday life here. The lake sits right against the town, the Sunowo lake and the Ełk river add more water still, and the woods begin almost where the streets end. The town is also a busy rail and road junction and a hub of the food industry, and it is home to the Katedra Świętego Wojciecha, seat of the diocese. The Muzeum Kropli Wody and the Muzeum Historyczne w Ełku give visitors two very different reasons to stay indoors on a rainy day.
Then there is the Zamek Krzyżacki w Ełku, where the whole story began – reason enough to carry this town wherever you go.
