Sundfossen
River Vorma
Ancient assembly
Ever wondered where the name comes from? An eid was the path around a waterfall, and anyone travelling on the river Vorma, down from the lake Mjøsa or up from Romerike, had to get past the Sundfossen waterfall right here. That made Eidsvoll a meeting place long before Christianity, and the river has kept it a thoroughfare into inland Norway ever since.
Standing on Sundettoppen, with the river below and the centre of Sundet spread along its banks, it is easy to feel that history and landscape are one and the same here. The water is still the main character: Vorma dyrelivsfredning protects the wildlife along the river, the bay at Måevja lies close by, and Eidsvoll prestegård naturreservat is another protected pocket of nature. The soil is heavy with clay, and farming was long the main living. In the east, the old gold finds are still remembered in the name Gullverket.
End the walk in Cecilie Thoresens park, where Den knelende soldat kneels quietly while Sundet goes about its day.
