Operation Market Garden

Every September, crowds gather on the Ginkelse Heide outside Ede to watch parachutists jump from Second World War aircraft that are still airworthy. They mark the British airborne landings of Operation Market Garden in 1944, when troops landed on this heath and fought their way towards Arnhem; veterans from Britain still come to watch.

Ede lies on the western flank of the Veluwe, at the southern end of the Gelderse Vallei, so the town has woodland and heath on one side and the open valley on the other. Estates such as Landgoed Kernhem, once a castle guarding the border of Guelders, and Landgoed Hoekelum lie on its edges, along with the nature reserve of Sysselt. In the First World War a large camp for Belgian refugees stood on the heath here, and the memorial Belgisch Vluchtelingenkamp V.O.E. 1914-1918 recalls it. The Historisch Museum Ede gathers the town's long story in one place.

If you have ever stood on that heath in September, looking up, you know: Ede is where you belong.
