Known for

Sele plain

Eboli climbs the slopes of Montedoro, a spur of the Monte Raione and Monte Ripalta group, while nine-tenths of its land lies flat across the alluvial plain of the Sele. It is farming country: olive oil, dairy and above all buffalo mozzarella, made on the plain the town spilled onto after the land was reclaimed in the last century.

Say "Eboli" anywhere in Italy and someone will quote Carlo Levi's Christ Stopped at Eboli; say it to someone from here and they think of something closer — the old town on the hill, the Basilica of St. Peter Alli Marmi at the foot of Montedoro, a summer evening in Piazza Carlo Levi. The past is never far off: the Fornaci Romane and the finds in the Museo Archeologico della Media Valle del Sele show how long people have worked this soil.

And above it all stands Castello Colonna, the eleventh-century fortress that tells you Eboli at a glance — a shape worth carrying with you wherever you go.
