Medieval old town
Fregatten Jylland
Glass art
Ebeltoft's oldest town seals carry an apple tree, and the name itself is tied to the Danish word for apple. The settlement began as a village or fishing hamlet and gained its market town privileges from King Erik Menved in the Middle Ages, and much of its medieval street plan survives so well that Ebeltoft once topped a list of the best preserved medieval towns in Denmark.
The town sits on the west side of the Hasnæs peninsula on Djursland, which makes it the only harbour town in East Jutland with a harbour facing west. Sea trade once made the town prosper, and in the wars with Sweden, Swedish forces dug in on the earthworks known as Skansen. Det Gamle Rådhus stands among the cobbled streets and half-timbered houses, and Farvergården and Det Lille Museum keep more of the town's story. Fregatten Jylland, the longest wooden warship in the world, is here too, and Glasmuseet Ebeltoft, one of the world's first glass museums, shows glass art from far beyond Djursland.
For anyone who grew up among these lanes, the map traces every corner turned on the way to the harbour and every summer that filled the town.
